Instead of shopping on Black Friday, opt outside for a free, expert-led, family-friendly hike at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore on Friday, November 24, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at West Beach. Co-sponsored by Save the Dunes, the interactive hike will be led by regional experts in fields such as birding, botany, insects, geology, and ecology.
We will hike up to 3.5 miles based on conditions with easy cut-offs back to the parking lot for shorter hikes of 1.0 mile and 2.0 miles in length. The hike is moderate in difficulty with 250 stairs and some sections of loose sand trail surface.
After the hike, please join Save the Dunes for an after hike event at a local restaurant to celebrate the outdoors. Details will be available at the hike or at www.savedunes.org.
This hike is inspired by REI’s #OtpOutside movement, in which last year 1.4 million people and 170 organizations were involved in outdoor activities on Black Friday. If you are going to share this event or your story, please use the hash tag #OptOutside.
Please meet at the West Beach parking lot, located at 376 North County Line Road in Portage, about one half mile north of U.S. Highway 12.
